From their landing page, it’s very easy for potential clients to be turned away from INGDirect. They position themselves as a really basic, simple and casual online banking group with limited functionality from the homepage. The truth after further investigation is quite the opposite.

They fare pretty well in terms of innovation because they provide a top-notch website with all the latest in Internet banking technology. They offer fully interactive investment tutorials with multiple stock market options and real-time account openings.

There are 3 major account categories available from the homepage. These include Savings, ShareBuilder and Home Loans. For a world-class bank, we expect more to be displayed on their homepage. Delving deeper we found out there is everything from investment accounts to loans and retirement accounts.

They are almost bang on target here. New and existing customers can call toll-free from 8AM – 8 PM, 7 days a and clients can access their accounts through a 24/7 Interactive Phone Service. There is an e-mail and regular mail as well as fax service. But there is no live help online – a bummer.

How easy is it to find addresses of the nearest bank branch? Is there a map of branches? Are opening hours and other useful information given? We found out..
They have seven cafes in NYC, Philadelphia, Wilmington DE, Los Angeles, Chicago, St Cloud MN and Honolulu. Tough luck if you’re not from around those areas. They basically want you to sip your coffee in their cafes while they convince you to hand over your money.

After searching for their privacy policy for several minutes we finally gave up. If it’s this hard to find, then we’re not at all impressed. A big zero on this one.
