Green Dot Corporation provides retail based financial services for America’s underserved community. The company offers prepaid MasterCard or Visa cards, bill payment, and direct deposit products. It also owns and operates domestic cash-acceptance networks that offer prepaid card reloading and various cash collection services to America's banks and financial services companies. They are the next best thing to credit cards, perhaps better.

Just what services does this online credit card site offer? Can customers log-in to accounts and check balances, statements, pay bills, top-up, use pre-paid services and transfer money? If so, how easy is it to do?.

Cool Mantra of prepaid

GreenDot offers clients a Debit MasterCard® or Visa® debit card personalized with their name. The cards can be used Everywhere MasterCard or Visa debit cards are accepted. And clients can shop online, pay bills and get cash at ATMs – just like with online credit cards. Essentially that’s it you pay them to give you a debit card; you deposit your own funds and pay them fees for the pleasure of using your own money.

How easy is it to navigate around the site? We tried and tested it out and graded..

This is certainly not the most attractive looking website. It provides a range of services for its Visa® and MasterCard® debit cards. They do a fair job of site design and ease-of-use. It certainly could use a boost in terms of flash banners and high resolution graphics. Again, it scores an average grade in this category.

Top marks here. GreenDot uses a thawte SSL 123 Certificate to offer secure communications by encrypting all data to and from the site. Their site certificate is valid until 8 December 2010. We were impressed by GreenDot security.

What rewards are offered to online customers? Is there a reward club or reward programs? If so, what do they offer deals on - flights, insurance or other products? We breakdown the deals and evaluate the rewards on offer. .

The only ‘reward’ they offer is a $10 credit that will be issued within five business days to the card that receives the first direct deposit of $250 or more from an employer or a government agency. Limit one credit per card. Otherwise there is nothing available from this debit card issuing service.

Why is it different to other credit card sites? We graded on originality and innovation..

They differ from a conventional credit card company in that there are no overdraft fees. And no penalty charges and no minimum balance. It’s pay as you go and reloadable. You can't get into trouble by spending too much – because it’s your money. It’s safer than cash because your money is protected if your personalized card is lost or stolen. So yes, there is innovation, but it’s a lot of jargon for two simple words: debit card.

Their privacy policy is way too convoluted. Clients have to agree that GreenDot Corporation (GDC) will receive and use personal information so that they may offer clients other products and services. ‘GDC's use of information about clients will not be governed by this Privacy Policy; instead, GDC's privacy policy will govern how GDC uses the information you provide to GDC.’ Go figure! It’s an absolute shocker. They score a fat zero on this one.

Can you contact the site with queries? This grades the email support, live chat and telephone contacts available to users..

They have online form support, telephone/fax and e-mail services. And if you’re prepared to wait a week or more, there is a mailing address in California. But overall it’s pretty bland, run-of-the-mill stuff. They could do well to have live online help with a call center banking agent assisting.
